E-mail and text abuse on the up

Posted on 01 August 2007 at 12:00

Workers are increasingly becoming victims of 'cyber bullying' as they receive abusive e-mails and text messages from colleagues. A fifth of employees have been bullied by e-mail and one in 20 via text messages.

And it does not stop in the workplace, with more people being bullied outside working hours, a survey people by the Government and union Unite revealed.

A Unite spokesman said: 'Bullying in the workplace can destroy people's lives. It also has a direct impact on an organisation's bottom line and we hope that making the financial impact clear will help management build a business case for tackling the issue.'

The survey of 1,000 people for the Dignity at Work Partnership also revealed that most workers would not know what to do if they became the victim of bullying in the office.

One in ten said they would do nothing and four per cent said they would consider leaving their job.
