Our workplace mediators offer a psychological approach to conflict resolution and have a long history in resolving disputes. This has resulted in a great depth of understanding of the causes and effects of conflict in a wide variety of different situations. Our approach:

• Gets beneath the surface
• Explores the underlying problems
• Uncovers the real motivators of the dispute
• Is forward looking

• Promotes continued relationships

We manage the conflict by drawing out the underlying deadlock that prevents the dispute from reaching a conclusion. Intractable disputes usually indicate a high level of underlying emotional content. Unless the mediator handles this effectively a resolution is less likely to emerge or to endure.

Beneath every apparent conflict there are usually some deeper issues that have:
(a) caused the conflict in the first place, and
(b) projected it to the point of deadlock

• For a lasting solution it is important to get to the real issue and not just aim for a negotiated agreement.
• Many mediators are trained in an ‘assisted negotiation’ style. This works well in some situations but not in difficulties where working relationships need to be maintained, and where the high emotional content makes it important to understand the problem more thoroughly.
• The more accurately the mediator understands the problem the quicker the resolution – our approach uncovers the underlying problems to reveal the real issues beneath the surface. With the psychological perspective mediators are trained to understand the core issues quickly and move the parties into a position of collaborative solution finding.
• Our mediators will also manage the delicate balance between effective discussion and realistic acceptance.

 We had tried mediation in the past but didn’t get a resolution. This time our experience was quite different as (he) saw beyond the legalities to the real issues that we have had. If he hadn’t I don’t think that we would have been able to sort this out and reach an agreement. Thank you.
